Berlin Marathon

The Berlin Marathon, inaugurated in 1974, has evolved into one of the world’s premier long-distance running events. Held annually on the last weekend of September, it is renowned for its flat and fast course, which has been the site of numerous world records. The marathon begins and ends near the iconic Brandenburg Gate, guiding runners through Berlin’s historic and culturally rich streets.

The 2024 Berlin Marathon, marking its 50th edition, took place on September 29, 2024. This milestone event attracted over 58,000 participants from 161 nations, with 54,280 runners successfully completing the race, setting a new record for the largest marathon worldwide.

In the men’s elite race, Ethiopian runner Milkesa Mengesha secured victory with a time of 2:03:17, narrowly surpassing Kenya’s Cybrian Kotut, who finished in 2:03:22. The women’s race was dominated by Ethiopia’s Tigist Ketema, who completed the course in 2:16:42, leading an Ethiopian sweep of the podium.

The Berlin Marathon is celebrated not only for its competitive excellence but also for its unifying spirit, bringing together athletes and spectators from around the globe. Its rich history and record-breaking course continue to make it a highlight in the international marathon calendar.
